School Visits

I love connecting with kids and teachers, and sharing about the writing process, some information about Brazil, and my book, Mr. Elephant’s Rio Tour! Each presentation runs between 30-45 minutes and is designed for Grades 1-5. I have enjoyed putting my training as a teacher (albeit for older students!) to use designing a presentation that will engage as many styles of learners as possible.  I include PowerPoint slides, props, audience participation, and even a little music to get students interested in learning about a new place.

During my presentation I tell the students a little bit about myself, why I wrote the book, and walk through a five-step process for how I went from an idea to a finished book. During one of those steps (research) we discuss some of the ways you can do research, and I share some things I learned about Brazil, the most-loved part of which is certainly the slide with Amazon rainforest animals on it! I also touch on the geography, culture, and language of Brazil, before concluding with a book reading and time for questions.

For younger students, I am very happy to come into their classroom (or have them come to me) for a brief introduction of myself and Brazil followed by a reading.

If there is a particular aspect of Brazil that would tie in with what your students are learning, I can customize my presentation with a week’s advance notice. For example, if your students are learning about money, I can spend a little time talking about Brazilian currency.

Below is a list of things I will need for a successful visit as well as my rates.

  • Projector for PowerPoint slides
  • A table for props
  • A signed Letter of Agreement
  • A schedule for the day with an approximate headcount
  • The opportunity to send home order forms so the students can purchase my book at a discount if they want their own copy. (I can also help set up a fundraiser to raise money for my fees through a book sale.)

If you have any questions about booking me for a school author visit please email me at yellowumbrellatours@gmail.com .

I also offer free Skype or FaceTime visits of around 30 minutes for individual classrooms, please email me for more details.

All half- and full-day bookings include a signed hardback copy of Mr. Elephant’s Rio Tour for the school library. To offset the cost of my speaking fees, I am happy to help set up a fundraiser using sales of my book.
